Is it true that bubble baths cause urinary tract infections in children
Indirectly, maybe.
Parents are often cautioned not to use bubble bath because it can contribute to urinary tract infections (UTIs). But no studies have proven a link between bubble bath and UTIs, says Ranjiv Mathews, associate professor of pediatric urology at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.
So what's the connection?
Bubble bath – in fact, any kind of strong soap or even soapy water – can irritate the opening of a child's urethra if it isn't rinsed off completely. Once the irritation begins, it can become painful to urinate, causing the child to hold her urine, which can lead to a UTI.
Some experts recommend delaying bubble baths until your child is at least 3 years old, but others, like Mathews, recommend avoiding them altogether. They also say it's better not to let a child sit in a tub of soapy water or water that contains shampoo.
